Municipal solid wastes, abbreviated as MSW, which contain significant amounts of non-carbonaceous material can also yield slag. Slag is impermeable and practically inert. It is useful in capping land fills, as foundation materials, and in road construction. The virtual elimination of net wastes from carbonaceous materials substantially reduces land fill area, capital, and operational requirements including design and construction of methane and green house gas venting systems.
